Darryl Dawkins Shatters Glass Backboard

During his stint in the NBA from 1975 to 1989, Darryl Dawkins established himself as one of the game’s most powerful dunkers.  His style earned him the nickname, “Chocolate Thunder” and in more than one instance, his dunks not only shattered his opponents’ spirits, but shattered the backboard as well.

On this day, November 13th, in 1979, Darryl Dawkins broke his first backboard glass in an NBA game.  The dunk came against the Kansas City Kings and is famous for leaving Kings player Bill Robinzine ducking away from the scene.  Dawkins, ever the media personality, named his dunk “The Chocolate-Thunder-Flying, Robinzine-Crying, Teeth-Shaking, Glass-Breaking, Rump-Roasting, Bun-Toasting, Wham-Bam, Glass-Breaker-I-Am-Jam.”

Dawkins went on to break his second backboard a mere three weeks later, which was not appreciated by NBA officials.  It was soon declared that breaking the backboard would lead to suspension and a fine.  The NBA would change to break away rims to prevent the issue in the future.
