Cy Young Wins Final Game

Cy Young threw the first World Series pitch ever in 1903, and ever since was one of the first dominant pitchers in Major League Baseball.  Young began his professional career in 1890 and went on to pitch for 22 years on five different teams.  Young’s place in baseball history is permanent.

On this day, September 22nd, in 1992, Cy Young recorded his final professional baseball win.  Young spent his final games pitching for the Boston Rustlers and recorded his final win as a shut out against the PIttsburgh Pirates.  Young’s 511 win total has withstood the test of time and remains a record today; the second place pitcher is 93 games behind Young.

Cy Young retired at the end of the 1911 season with 511 wins, 2,803 strike outs, 3 no-hitters and one perfect game under his belt.  Cy Young was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937.  Young died in 1955 and the Cy Young award was created one year later to honor Major League Baseball’s best pitcher of the season. The award is still given today and is one of baseball’s top honors.
