Christopher Columbus goes ashore on an island and names it San Juan Bautista (Puerto Rico).

Columbus is probably one of the most venerable explorers to ever grace this earth. From songs, to books, to conspiracy theories, he was at the center of it all. After having success on his first voyage, Columbus left Cardiz in 1493 with 17 ships, 1,200 men, and the intent to setup permanent colonies.

On this day November 19th, in 1493, Christopher Columbus goes ashore on an island and names it San Juan Bautista, in honor of Saint John the Baptist.

San Juan Bautista would later be renamed Puerto Rico; however, the capital of the country would retain the title as San Juan. Puerto Rico means rich port, and the island is known for its abundant ports and fisheries. Puerto Rico is a territory of the U.S. without representation, by choice of the Puerto Rican people.
