Game Between Cal and Stanford Ends with Kickoff Return Touchdown

Stanford and California-Berkeley have one of the most heated rivalries in all of college football.  Every year the two teams face off in the Big Game for the right to claim supremacy.  In 1982, the Big Game had one of the most memorable and exciting endings in college football history.

On this day, November 20th, in 1982, the Cal-Stanford football game ends with an amazing last second kickoff return for a touchdown. What is referred to simply as “the play,” included five lateral passes to complete an improbable touchdown return.  The last second play resulted in Cal beating Stanford 25-20.  The play was made even more chaotic by the fact that the Stanford band, believing the game had already ended, were on the field as the last Cal player to catch a lateral pass ran to the end zone.

To this day, “the play” is still filled with controversy.  Stanford fans continue to argue that two of the five lateral passes were actually illegal and that Cal should not have won that game.
