Buckingham Palace is damaged during a German air raid.

World War II was one of the most grueling and terrifying battles in the history of man. In the height of the war Hitler and the Nazi regime came the closest they ever could to claiming the life of King George VI.

On this day September 11th, in 1940 Buckingham Palace was damaged during a German air raid. According to a letter written by Queen Elizabeth, when the sirens began to wail the Queen was “battling” to remove a stubborn eyelash from the King’s eye.

Buckingham Palace is the official residence of the British Monarch, and it was built in 1705. William IV commissioned the work, but being that he died before it was completed, Queen Victoria was the first  British monarch to reside there.
