Marty McSorley, while playing for the Boston Bruins, slashes Vancouver Canucks player Donald Brashear

Sports brings us memorable moments that last for a life time.  Usually, these moments are inspirational and celebratory.  However, sometimes, moments withstand the test of time because of how awful they are.

It was on this day, February 21st, 2000, that Marty McSorley slashed Donald Brashear during an NHL hockey game.  The slash occurred while McSorley was facing the other way and there were only 3 seconds left in the game.  Brashear slammed into the ground, resulting in a traumatic concussion amongst other injuries.

McSorley, who was playing for the Boston Bruins at the time, was later criminally charged with assault. When he was convicted, he was not ordered to serve jail time as he was only given probation. McSorley was lucky that Donald Brashear didn’t suffer any more serious injuries, but the slash was vicious and it remains one of the worst incidents in professional sports history.
