During Britain’s attempt to seize Spanish colonies, British forces capture Buenos Aires.

Britain had lost its most financially lucrative colony a few decades earlier, with help from the Spanish. They made up for the loss by taking a Spanish colony. In 1711, the Rio de Plata was brought to the attention of the English government, as it was said to have been the perfect place for a British colony.

On this day June 27th, British forces capture Buenos Aires. British interest was in the Rio de Plata Basin, which includes both Argentina and Uruguay. On June 25th British forces captured Quilmes, a city near Buenos Aires, and today captured Buenos Aires. Wealthy citizens of the city welcomed the British, and politicians and religious leaders of Buenos Aires swore their loyalty. A few months later Spain would regain control of the city.

Buenos Aires is the largest city and Capital of Argentina. It has the second largest metropolitan area in South America after Sao Paulo. The metropolitan area has over 12 million people. Buenos Aires is said to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and is a tourist hotspot. The British attempt to conquer Argentina ended up being a good thing for Argentinians, as it gave them the motivation to declare their own revolt against the Spanish, with Argentina seceding in 1810.
