Britain signs treaty granting independence to Jordan.

Jordan has a history that goes back over 3000 years. There are not many countries that can say that, and Jordan is even recorded in Biblical texts referred to as the Kingdom of Edom. Jordan has passed through many different hands along the way to its current constitutional monarchy which has been in place since 1952.

On this day March 22nd, in 1946, Britain signs a treaty granting Independence to Jordan. Since 1922 Britain had been given a protectorate status over Jordan, which was then called Transjordan. In 1951 Jordan was proclaimed the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan whereby a King would rule this middle eastern country.

Jordan has very few natural resources, and it is for this reason that it is continuously working on a way to enter the global market. Since signing a Peace Treaty with Israel in 1991, the U.S. agreed to give hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign aid, and allowed for them to be exempt in a number of import taxes as long as a certain portion of the materials were acquired from Israel. Jordan is a founding member of the Arab League and borders Israel as well as other Middle Eastern countries. It has a population of roughly 6.5 million people and it continues to grow economically.
