Bobby Thigpen Record Saves

In his 8 year career, Bobby Thigpen had his ups and downs.  In his career, the relief pitcher recorded more losses than wins with a 31-36 record, but accumulated 376 strikeouts and 201 saves.

On this day, September 3rd, in 1990, Chicago White Sox pitcher Bobby Thigpen beat the Major League Baseball record for saves.  The late last two seasons of the 1980s were both respectable for Thigpen and he recorded more than 30 saves, but 1990 was by far Thigpen’s best season. In 1990, Thigpen set a record with 57 saves and was able to keep a 1.83 ERA.

After 1990, Thigpen’s career began to decline mainly due to injuries.  Thigpen’s 201 career saves ranked him 41st on Major League Baseball’s all-time saves list.
