Bob Dylan makes New York City stage debut at Gaslight Cafe in Greenwich Village

The Gaslight Café in Greenwich Village, New York City was known as the “basket house” primarily because musicians would be paid the profits of a passed around basket. It was at the Gaslight Café that most people sought refuge to express their free-spirited culture.

On this day, September 6th, in 1961, Bob Dylan makes his first appearance at the Gaslight Café. He premiered his singles Masters of War and A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall.

The live recordings done at the café heavily influenced Dylan’s 2005 album, Live at the Gaslight.
