The early 80s saw some outstanding tennis. Several rivalries existed which were legendary. And while in recent times Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic have reminded us of the early days – many still yearn for those glory days.
It was on this day, July 5th, 1980, that Bjorn Borg defeated John McEnroe at Wimbledon. Borg held a number one ranking going into the match, McEnroe was ranked number 2. Their tennis match is widely considered one of the greatest of all-time.
In the 4th set, Bord leading 2 sets to 1, there was a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker wouldn’t end – each player held strong on set points. Finally, McEnroe was able to win the tie breakers 18 – 16, taking the match to a fifth set. In the final set, Borg won 8 – 6 winning a match that is continues to be talked about to this very day.
