Bill Mazeroski Walk off Home Run in World Series

Nicknamed “Maz,” Bill Mazeroski played his entire career with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1956 to 1972.  In his long career, Maz was able to accumulate 10 All-Star appearances, 8 Golden Glove Awards and 2 World Series Championships.  In his World Series appearances, Mazeroski played a pivotal role in the Pirates’ victories.

On this day, October 13th, in 1960, Bill Mazeroski hit a dramatic walk-off home run in Game 7 of the World Series.  The legendary home run came against Yankees pitcher Ralph Terry with the score tied 9-9 at the bottom of the ninth.  Mazeroski’s shot flew over the left field wall and sealed the Pirates victory, and a World Series championship, with a score of 10-9.

Though not typically a power hitter, Mazeroski accounted for half of the Pirates’ home runs in the 1960 World Series.  For his heroics in Game 7, along with his many other career accomplishments, Mazeroski was voted to the Hall of Fame in 2001.  his Jersey, #9, was retired by the Pirates.
