The Babe, makes his debut as a 19 year-old pitcher for the Boston Red Sox

Babe Ruth is one of the greatest hitters to ever play the game.  He hit for power, hit for average, and defined his era.  However, people often forget that he came into the Majors as a pitcher, for the Red Sox.

It was on this day, July 11th, 1914, that Babe Ruth made his professional baseball debut for the Boston Red Sox. As a 19 year-old pitcher, Babe Ruth, also known as The Babe pitched in his first game.  It is ironic that the greatest Yankees hitter of all-time started out as a pitcher for their rival Red Sox.

Babe Ruth was sold the Yankees by the Red Sox in 1919. The Yankees turned him into a day to day right fielder and the rest is history.  And of all of the stats most impressive about Babe Ruth, it is his lifetime batting average of .342, one of the best of all-time, that stands out to this day.  Usually home run hitters don’t hit for average, but The Babe – could do everything.
