Azerbaijan Democratic Republic joins the Soviet Union.

Azerbaijan is an anomaly. It is the most liberal Muslim state in the world, and although it’s not officially a Muslim state, a majority of the population is Muslim. It is bordered by Russia, Georgia, Iran, Armenia, and the Caspian Sea.

On this day April 28th, in 1920, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic joins the Soviet Union. The Democratic Republic had been created in 1918, and they regained independence along with many other countries in 1991. Azerbaijan is located at the center of where ancient cultures inhabited.

Being part of the USSR occurred after the Bolsheviks took over the country. Azerbaijan had a bustling oil industry which provided the Soviet Union with 60% of its oil production.  This is the second largest country in the Eurasia region, with almost 10 million people. Azerbaijan has a continuously growing economy, besides for it being an oil rich country, and is developing new technologies – and it hopes to become a country with (outer) Space Industries.
