Aretha Franklin becomes the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Aretha Franklin, the woman that demands R-E-S-P-E-C-T possesses a unique vocal quality and is known as one of the best vocalist in the world. Through her lyrics and style, she defines soul music in all its forms. Initially, Franklin was rooted in gospel music, but as her singing style developed, she incorporated blues, jazz, and funk to her music. Her inspirations come from many and her sacred and secular approach to music forged her way into the hearts of the 60’s generation.

On this day, January 3rd, in 1987, Aretha Franklin is the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She is known for her role in defining the language of new age soul music, and her fire performance in the studio and on stage. In 1968 she was officially honored with the title “Queen of Soul.”

As a measure of her impact, Franklin has won over 19 Grammys, charted Top 40 Singles 43 times, received the Presidential Honor Award, and has sung for the inaugurations of President Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
