American troops leave the Dominican Republic after having been there since 1916.

In a ploy to get involved with Latin American government, on May 13th the U.S. deposed Secretary of War, Desiderio Arias, who had seized power. They did so by threatening to bomb the capitol Santo Domingo. American Troops then landed and within two months had control over the Dominican Republic.

On this day June 26th, in 1924, American troops leave the Dominican Republic. Many Dominicans had disdain for the foreigners who they felt did not care in the slightest for their well-being. Guerrilla attacks were employed against the American army.

It was after World War I, in 1921, that American support for occupation in the Dominican Republic dwindled. American troops would later occupy the Dominican Republic 1965-1966. The Dominican Republic is an island in the Caribbean. It was colonized by Spain, which is why Dominicans have phenotypic features similar to Spain, as well the national language is Spanish. The Dominican Republic today has a population of roughly 10 million.
