Closing ceremonies take place for the 16th Winter Olympics, in Albertville, France

The Summer and Winter Olympics rotate every 2 years.  This spreads out the games for fans across the world so that they can cheer on their country every other year.  However, the Summer and Winter Olympic games were played in the same year up until 1992.

It was on this day, February 23rd, 1992, that the closing ceremonies took place for the 16th Winter Olympics.  The ceremonies took place in Albertville, France, and it would be the final time the Winter Olympics closed in a year in which the Summer Olympics would close as well.

It was the third time that France successfully hosted the Winter Olympics. They were played in Chamonix, France in 1924, and in Grenoble, France in 1968.
