Abraham Lincoln Issues the Emancipation Proclamation

Abraham Lincoln is a President whom has withstood the test of time.  He made a clear impact as President, and he continues to be talked about long after his time.  His life has been depicted in many documentaries and films such as Steven Spielberg’s 2012 film which starred Daniel Day-Lewis as the former President.

It was on this day, September 22, in 1862, that President Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation.  The proclamation helped lead to the end of slavery and the civil war.

The Proclamation took effect on New Years Day in 1863.  And while some people in the South were upset with Lincoln, African-Americans applauded it and it helped eventually lead them to freedom.
