The 76ers lose their 73rd game – setting the record for the most single season losses in NBA history

Positive records for winning steaks, championships won, and points scored are fun.  Fans love to quote them and teams love to promote them.  However, there are embarrassing records that players and teams have – which can be haunting for a long time.

It was on this day, March 25th, 1973, that the Philadelphia 76ers lost their 73rd game.  This set the record for the most losses in one season in NBA history.  Their final record was a putrid 9 – 73.

At one point in the season, the 76ers lost 34 of 35 games. The Sixers finished an NBA record 59 games behind the Boston Celtics for first place in their division.  What made the record all the more difficult for Philadelphians was the fact that just 6 years earlier the 76ers had set the record for the most wins ever in an NBA season.
