3M first markets Scotch tape

The 3M Company is a multinational conglomerate corporation that produces over 55,000 products and employees over 80,000 people. Some of their products include abrasives, laminates, adhesives, medical products, dental products, and car care products. 3M operates in more than 60 countries, 29 of them being international.

It was on this day, September 8, 1930, that 3M first marketed Scotch tape. It was invented by 3M’s engineer, Richard Drew, and its name came about while he was testing how much adhesive to add. Apparently, a frustrated body shop painted shouted, “Take this tape back to those Scotch bosses of yours and tell them to put more adhesive on it!”

The Scotch Brand Cellulose Tape, a near-invisible, waterproof transparent tape was made nearly five years after that. Scotch tape is used by people every day, whether it is for mending torn pages, ripped products, or sealing together boxes for packaging.
