The World’s First Wiki

The idea of a wiki is simple, users can share, edit and add information to pages to create a vast amount of user-generated content.  The user friendly concept behind wikis have made the websites very popular on the internet today.  Although most people would consider wikipedia.com one of the most well-known wikis, the first wiki was the creation of Ward Cunningham in the 1990s.

On this day, March 25th, in 1995 WikiWikiWeb, the world’s first wiki, was made public by  Ward Cunnigham.  Cunningham first had the idea for the wiki website in 1994, when thinking of a way to easily exchange information between programmers.  The site was initially going to be named “Quickweb,” but Cunningham was inspired to use the word wiki, which means fast in Hawaiin.  In addition to creating the world’s first wiki, Cunningham is also credited with the development of the first wiki software, WikiBase.

WikiWikiWeb is still an active website used by software developers and programmers throughout the world.
