Throughout the nation, a number of Occupy movements began, such as Occupy LA, Occupy Berkeley, Occupy D.C and many more. The movement reached international level and became an ongoing movement that is Europe, Asia, Latin America as well as Africa. The origins of the movements are attributed to the first occupy that started it all: Occupy Wall Street.
On September 17th 2011, Occupy Wall Street, a people-powered movement to protest America’s increasing wealth gap, is launched in Manhattan’s Financial District. It was all initiated because people wanted to stand up and speak out about the inequalities that exist in society. The Occupy Wall Street movement was centered around the economic inequality due to greed and corruption amongst large corporations.
Their main slogan was “We are the 99%”, pointing out the unjust economical situation that existed in the United States, with 1% of the population holding all the control in the economy. The movement promoted the idea of uniting the 99% of the population to make a difference.
