Larry Page Becomes CEO of Google

In the last decade, there have been few companies that have grown as quickly as Google.  Taking its roots in software and internet search engines, Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin.  In 2001, Page and Brin appointed Eric Schmidt as CEO of Google. Under Schmidt, Google grew considerably and made several notable acquisitions, including the purchase of YouTube in 2006.

On this day, January 20th, in the year 2011, Google named co-founder Larry Page as the new CEO.  By becoming the company’s new CEO, Page’s would replace Eric Schmidt, who would take the role of Executive Chairman.  Page would officially become CEO in April of 2011.   Upon stepping into his new position, Page became committed to improving Google and continuing to cultivate the company’s growth.

In his first year as CEO, Page has been very successful.  In the two quarters after becoming CEO, Page helped Google increase revenue by more than 30%, as well as acquiring Motorola Mobility.  Page was named CEO of the Year by Investors Business Daily at the end of 2011.
