Jay Leno makes his last appearance as Johnny Carson’s permanent guest host on the Tonight Show.

On this day, April 15th, in 1992 the six Emmy Award winner, Johnny Carson, officially retires from the Tonight Show. Jay Leno, Carson’s successor, was a stand-in host for five years before becoming the permanent host for the Tonight Show. Leno had limited guest appearances because he preferred to host the show himself, however, the show failed to accumulate substantial ratings and Late Night Conan O’Brien replaced Jay Leno.
