Google purchases video sharing website YouTube – for $1.65 billion in stock

In 2005, three former PayPal employees created YouTube, and the site has been the instigator of numerous viral videos ever since. Most of the content on YouTube is uploaded by individuals, and uploads range in content from amateur video bloggers to music videos and TV clips.

On this day, October 9th, in 2006, Google purchased the video sharing website YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock.

YouTube is generally considered the third most visited website on the Internet, following Google and Facebook. Estimates suggest that YouTube consumed as much bandwidth in 2007 as the entire Internet in 2000. YouTube now operates as a subsidiary of Google.
