19,121 fans attend the first ever Wrestlemania at Madison Square Garden in New York City

The World Wrestling Federation rose to unexpected popularity in the mid 80s.  While most fans knew the matches were fixed, the intrigue grew as exciting wrestlers competed in front of live audiences.  And the success of WrestleMania proved to America that the WWF was here to stay.

It was on this day, March 31st, 1985, that the first annual WrestleMania professional wrestling event was produced.  The event took place in New York City at Madison Square Garden in front of a packed house of over 19,000 fans.

Over one millions fans viewed the event through closed-circuit TV, making it the largest showing of an event on pay per view TV in US history.  There were 9 events total, and the main event featured Mr. T, Hulk Hogan, and Roddy Piper.
