Hockey is the most popular sport in Canada. It also has become very popular in the US as the National Hockey League is one of the 4 major professional US sports leagues. The NHL playoffs draw viewers from across the globe, with stars such as Maurice Richard, Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky helping popularize the league – and the sport – over the years.

It was on this day, March 4th, 1875, that the first ever indoor hockey game was played.  It took place in Montreal, Canada at the Victoria Skating rink.

The game was played between two teams consisting of 9 players and they used a wooden puck.  The rules of outdoor hockey were followed for this indoor game. The game was setup by James Creighton, and in true hockey fashion, there was reportedly a fight after the game.
